Ura's World
Conservationist John Walker presents the beautifully illustrated, charitable book ‘Ura’s World’. ‘Ura’s world’ tells a tale about a young, spirited, mischievous little moonbear named Ura and his charismatic gang of forest friends in their mountain environment, far from the city. Among these friends are the wise old eagle “Doc Suri”, a spectacle-wearing creature with an interesting history. We read about Doc Suri’s first encounter with a Human and learn a thing or two about the value of helping others. We meet the bright bird “Gaachi”, who later comes to Ura’s rescue as young Ura finds trouble as easily as he finds fun. The story ends with another encounter with the human world, and Ura and friends learn a lesson about the manner in which life holds a delicate balance of action and consequence. Proceeds support animal charities across Asia.

‘A Beary Good Time’
On September 5th, the Groove Magazine and the ‘Groove-moonbears.org’ team made the trek to Pusan for a much anticipated Moonbear Fundraiser, featuring the ultra-cool and creatively linguistic band ‘Hajimama’. The event was held at ‘The Basement’, a well-known local haunt that is small in size but well frequented. It’s the sort of place where “everybody knows your name” and owner Liam Cullivan probably knows your drink too.
A great time was had by all and we would like to extend their thanks to the immensely sexy staff of The Basement, and the members of both ‘Cosmic Cosmics band’ and featured band Hajimama, for channelling their ‘inner fashion model’ to help us sell our fab T-shirts. Liam was kind enough to throw in a free drink to buyers. All proceeds for shirt sales will go to the “Save Miracle the Bear Fund”.
If you’re in Pusan, be sure to stop at the Basement, located conveniently near PNU and about 20 minutes from the KTX. Well worth the 3 hour train ride from Seoul and you can look forward to waking up to a morning at the beach if you hurry…the warm weather is waning! Be sure to have a shot of sambuca with Liam before you head home and enjoy the complimentary munchies and good company.

Stephanie Young is one of Korea’s many expat teachers who feel an urge to give back to the Korean community through their resources and creativity.
On Saturday, October 24, she did just that. In collaboration with The Tandoori Bar Gimhae, Bear Necessity Korea and the Seoul Writers Workshop, she hosted an open mic/Bingo event that had the house full and the feet stomping. The goal: Raise funds for animal welfare organization ‘Bear Necessity Korea’, and The Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center.
“I feel like I showed everyone a good time and feel great about the causes we supported”, said Stephanie, who is lead singer of the band “Ajuma Rock”, one of the night’s musical features. She was joined by the highly talented Greg Dolezal, who you may recognize as the president of The Association of Teachers of English in Korea, Mike Crawford, Andy Horwood, and Peter Stroobosscher. A true crowd pleaser was The Jangyu Guitar Ensemble, an instrumental group with a unique style that merges tradition with the present.
The Seoul Writers workshop provided copies of their new anthology, ‘Every Second Sunday 2009’, whose proceeds support both issues.
Special thanks to Tandoor Gimhae, and to the outstanding musicians who helped make the night a success.
