Skin ‘Wellness’ Product with Ugly reality: Bear Fat Soap on Korean Market, marketed as “Peaceful”

In 2010, the ‘Secret of living Nature’ has some alarming applications in Korea. What does that mean? Eco friendly? Not for OR company skin products!

We are urging environmentally aware consumers to stay clear of the company known as ‘O’R, spelled 오르 in Hangul. The Korean company, whose website can be found at http://cafe.naver.com/orcompany, promotes Bear fat soap, boasting it will bring you “Peace of Skin”.

This practice brings in to question the laws concerning bear parts as the consumption of bear meat is illegal in Korea.  At present, bear bile farming is legal. Bears may be legally slaughtered for their parts at the age of 10 years. This is done to fuel the oriental medicine trade. The live extraction of bile is prohibited by law. This company, which purchases the fat from bears slaughtered for bile encourages  a new and disappointing form of revenue for bear farmers.

As the law is obscure, we are taking a grass roots approach and asking Korean residents to boycott the company.
